Arizona's Air Quality Conundrum

On the subject of our atmosphere, there has been substantial dialogue and debate over greenhouse gases, global warming, acid rain, and humanity's responsibility in the generation thereof, and, indeed, these issues are rather contentious in the political sphere. Where public discourse has neglected to apply appropriate deliberation and examination is in the general quality of our air and the health effects stemming from poor air quality. In addition, there is not enough public awareness of the effective and actable solutions to air quality problems, nor is there enough individual responsibility to enact those solutions.

Cystic fibrosis patients who are exposed to pollutants stemming from industrial and automotive emissions or improper use and maintenance of HVACS experience a drastic decrease in lung function. Smog has been linked to chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, emphysema, and other lower respiratory illnesses. Air pollution is also statistically related with higher rates of fatigue, allergies, heart attack, stroke, DNA damage, and premature birth. According to the American Lung Association's "State of the Air" report, 79% of Maricopa county citizens are at high risk for respiratory complications as a result of poor air quality. Moreover, the World Health Organization has concluded that 41,200 people die per year in the United States from causes "attributable to environmental risk factors." As one might presuppose, poor air quality has the worst effects on the demographics least capable to combat the irritants in our air: the elderly, the young, and the chronically ill.

Because of our concept of public space, the quality of our air may appear to be strictly a matter of public policy, something far beyond an individual's control, something that only corporate planning or government regulation could alter. To an extent air quality is a public concern, because most of the pollutants in our air are created by urban, industrial, commercial, or environmental factors, but it is just as much an individual concern. All of those urban, industrial, and environmental pollutants that plague the atmosphere also enter into homes at alarming rates. Once these pollutants enter into a home, they are typically trapped there by humidity, air pressure flow, HVACs, and building envelope. Then, the chemicals used in daily domestic life compound these outdoor pollutants. The outcome is that the concentration of the pollutants in the average home is actually about two times as dense as the concentration of those same pollutants in the atmosphere. If one considers that the average person spends the bulk of the day indoors, it becomes clear why indoor air quality is rapidly becoming a major issue.

Everyday indoor air pollutants that are considered noxious, toxic, volatile, flammable, carcinogenic, allergenic, antigenic, radioactive, or otherwise hazardous include particulate matter, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), microbial contaminants, Legionella, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, tetrachloroethylene, methane, arsenic, cyanide, smoke, ozone, aerosols, asbestos, radon, and lead.

Indoor air quality is a complicated dilemma without any easy solutions. Poor indoor air quality is often compounded by outdoor air pollution, which creates a paradoxical conundrum where indoor air must be ventilated efficiently for health reasons, but outdoor air is too contaminated to be suitable for indoor intake.

There are, however, several different home improvement measures individuals can enact to reduce the presence and impact of air pollution in their homes. Houseplants are capable of filtering and metabolizing many pollutants, especially VOCs, microbial contaminants, and carbon/oxygen-based gases. Houseplants also help balance oxygen-carbon levels. Many common household products, especially cleaning products, fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, contain ozone, ammonia, chlorine, arsenic, cyanide, and other harmful chemicals that are highly reactive and can compound with outdoor air pollutants. Reducing or eliminating the use of these products is essential to improving air quality. Having your home inspected for the presence of toxic, radioactive, and carcinogenic materials such as lead, radon, and asbestos is an important safeguard. Inspection is especially necessary in older dwellings that were built before awareness and regulation of these materials existed. Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are necessary tools for measuring air quality and safeguarding against house fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, and low oxygen levels. Regularly ensuring the functionality of heating devices, such as furnaces, boilers, water heaters, stoves, and ovens, will protect against dangerous levels of flammable, volatile, and toxic chemicals such as methane, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. Using dehumidifiers to regulate air humidity will reduce the presence of microbial contaminants. HVAC design is also crucial. Pairing an HVAC system with a carbon dioxide sensor allows for need-based ventilation, which can help maintain clean air. Air filters are important for filtering some outdoor air pollutants such as particulate matter before they are trapped indoors. Increasingly, HVAC systems are being designed to remain in a positive air-pressure state, which better controls the influx of outdoor air. Positive air-pressure state HVACs are important in urban areas, where outdoor air contains abnormally high levels of hazardous materials and ventilation is still needed.

Considering Maricopa County has repeatedly violated the 1990 Clean Air by failing to meet air quality standards and has recently received the worst possible air quality rating from the American Lung Association, it would be prudent for residents of the Phoenix metropolitan area to consider enhancing their indoor air quality by updating and enhancing their HVAC system. These precautions, along conscientious, pollution-limiting use of our public air, will help combat some of the air quality problems and the health complications thereof, which we have experienced over the past few decades in the Valley of the Sun.

As I was sitting there in the K&N info session, listening to a bald man with a raspy voice throwing me his best pitch on air filters, I thought to myself, "K&N really does care for their customers."

This guy wasn't just some salesman. Heck, he was as nervous as 6th grader giving a book report in front of the class. He stuttered and stammered over his words, as if it were his first presentation. But you know what? The guy knew what he was talking about. Cars are his life. Maybe it was the excitement in his words or the sweat dripping down his face, but I could tell he wasn't faking. He loved his job and loved talking about auto air filters. He even told us his life story-- about growing up working on cars with his dad.

But, back to the debate. People around the country are bringing their cars to dealerships and mechanics with MAF(Mass Air Flow Sensor) problems. The problem-MAF failure. What causes MAF problems? The dealerships claim excess oil from K&N filters is to blame.

The K&N representative, however, gave a compelling argument. If you are not familiar with what a K&N filter looks like, let me explain. It is cone shaped part, basically constructed of a paper filter with wire mesh around it. It attaches to a hose that brings air into the engine; blocking dirt, bugs, and any other hazardous objects that happen to make their way under your hood. The paper, which is the filter, is coated in oil.

Have you ever gotten a really greasy piece of pizza and blotted it with a napkin. If you haven't, I will give you the low down. The napkin absorbs the grease, practically making the paper transparent. Well the paper is similar. The filter absorbs the oil, which coats it for protection, and is invisible. You can't even see it. Mechanics are claiming that the oil from the filter is coming off the paper an affecting the MAF. Even if you were driving 103mph and held a grease covered napkin out the window, the oil wouldn't come off-trust me.

His number two argument. The MAF is fouled by oil right? Well, the MAF is in the engine. Do you know what is constantly cycling through the engine? You got it-- oil. It is much more likely for oil from the engine to get sucked through the intake and foul the MAF.

His final point. Is the filter fouling the MAF or is the MAF flawed? It is just as likely that the MAF comes defective from the factory. Mechanics are telling customers that MAF readings show it is "saturated" with oil from the K&N filter. But I looked at the cone-shaped piece in the man's hands. It was a solid, dry piece. He made a good point. Where would all this "excess" oil come from? Hmmm...

Of the 2,500,000 filters K&N sells a year, they encounter less than 200 dealership problems annually. The representative continued to explain the company's lengthy product testing process. I work for an automotive company, but I'm not that into my car. I'm more of a motorcycle guy. My point being, I was ready to buy a K&N air filter. On top of all the testing, K&N works with customers to make sure dealerships honor their warranties. Solid argument if you ask me.

There are many factors that influence the performance of your vehicle's engine. For example, the oxygen sensors, valves, head gasket, and myriad other components must be working properly if your engine is to perform efficiently. Having said that, many of the engine-related problems that plague drivers are due to their fuel injectors (FIs). They become dirty over time. When that happens, you might experience a decline in the performance and efficiency of your engine.

Below, we'll take a closer look at the effects a dirty FI can have on your car. I'll describe what happens when clogs develop and describe the factors that contribute to obstructions.

When Fuel Injectors Become Clogged

If you have ever seen an FI up close, you'll already know that a small obstruction can cause the air-fuel mixture to lean out. A lot of drivers mistakenly think a significant blockage is necessary in order to affect an injector's operation. In reality, the blockage may represent no more than ten percent of the nozzle's opening. Even that can potentially lead to misfiring. As a result, excess oxygen leaves the cylinder and flows into the exhaust system. The oxygen sensor takes note of the excess and reports the lean mix to the computer.

Within the closed feedback loop, the computer will adjust to the lean mixture by sending more fuel to the injectors. Unfortunately, this does not resolve the underlying problem. The issue is made worse by an altered spray pattern. If the spray pattern is affected due to a clog, the fuel will burn less efficiently in the combustion chamber.

The Root Cause Of Clogging

Even though most modern FIs are designed to resist clogging, it happens frequently. The reason is due to the gasoline that flows through the system. The gasoline you buy at the pump is filled with hydrocarbons. Within the hydrocarbons, there are olefins, a waxy substance that contributes to deposits that accumulate and clog the FIs.

When you turn your car off, the fuel injectors remain extremely hot. The heat causes any residual gasoline still within the nozzles to vaporize. Unfortunately, the olefins are left behind. They harden into deposits and over thousands of miles, begin to form an obstruction in the nozzles. The problem occurs so gradually that drivers seldom realize it's happening.

Gasoline contains special detergents and additives that are designed to keep the fuel injectors clean. However, low-cost suppliers often reduce the level of these elements in order to cut costs and preserve their profit margin. The irony is that many people buy low-priced gas to save a small amount of money without realizing that doing so sets the stage for expensive repairs down the road.

Cleaning The Fuel Injectors

A lot of mechanics suggest cleaning your fuel injectors every 30,000 miles to ensure they remain unclogged and able to deliver an efficient spray pattern. If you have never taken the time to clean them, you will likely notice a marked improvement in your engine's performance.

To start, if you lack experience working with cars, you should leave the cleaning to your mechanic. The job takes less than half an hour, but can seem complex, even when cleaning the FIs while they're in place. You'll need to use special equipment to feed the cleaning agent to the fuel rail (while your engine is running). You'll also need to disengage your fuel pump and block the return line. As a side note, taking the fuel pump offline may cause a fault code; it will need to be cleared after you've finished cleaning the FIs.

Once the cleaning agent has gone through the engine and your fuel injectors, engage the fuel pump (clear the fault code, if necessary). You should be able to examine the injectors to determine whether all obstructions have been cleared. If a blockage persists, you may need remove the FIs in order to perform a more thorough cleaning.

Dirty fuel injectors are a common problem, especially in cases where drivers use low-priced gasoline. Plan to have the FIs cleaned every three or four years to ensure they remain free from clogs.

Understanding The Role Of Your Vehicle's Coolant Sensor

There are several sensors under the hood that influence the operation of your engine. These include the knock sensor, oxygen sensor, and throttle position sensor. Arguably, one of the most important is the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor. As its name implies, this component is designed to monitor the temperature created during your engine's internal combustion process.

Below, we'll provide a brief overview of the ECT sensor, and explain how it affects the performance of your engine. You'll also learn how to identify signs the part may be failing.

The Coolant Sensor And Your Engine's Performance

The main job of the coolant sensor is to gauge the temperature of your engine, and send this information to your powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM uses the information for a number of purposes, all of which are meant to optimize the operation of your engine.

For example, the computer will modify the level of fuel that is sent to the cylinders; it will alter spark timing; it may also disregard information from the oxygen sensor if you are cold-starting your car. In some cases, the ECT sensor will also adjust the function of the cooling fan.

By sending accurate information to your PCM, this sensor influences the operation of your ignition system, fuel system, and ultimately, your engine. Thus, it helps improve the overall performance of your vehicle.

Signs Of A Problem

Signs of a malfunctioning coolant sensor are not always obvious. For example, it may fail to inform your PCM that your engine is cold. Normally, when you cold-start your car, your computer modifies the air-fuel mixture in the cylinders to run "richer." It does this by running your vehicle in "open loop" mode so the engine can quickly reach standard operating temperature. If the computer is unaware of the cold-start, it may not engage an open loop. This can lead to idling and driveability problems while your car is cold.

Poor fuel efficiency can also occur. This happens when the ECT sensor fails to tell the PCM to close the open loop. Excess fuel is delivered to the cylinders, and is essentially wasted. This will also increase the level of emissions produced in the exhaust.

Note that the symptoms of a failing coolant sensor are difficult to identify because they are subtle. Moreover, the end results (i.e. poor idle, excess fuel consumption, etc.) can be caused other components, such as a malfunctioning thermostat. The first indication noticed by drivers is often an engine fault code. Unfortunately, the codes can be misleading.

Replacing The Component

It's worth noting that fault codes can be generated for the ECT sensor for reasons that may have little to do with the part. For example, suppose your engine overheats. As noted earlier, the coolant sensor is responsible for tracking temperature around the assembly, and delivering the information to the PCM. If the assembly suddenly overheats, the computer may mistakenly think the problem lies with the sensor. This and similar situations can produce a fault code. Be aware it can happen before replacing the part.

Mechanics approach replacing the ECT sensor differently. Some will suggest replacing it if your thermostat fails, even if the sensor is working properly. The reason is because the part can fail down the road due to age. Other mechanics recommend waiting until the sensor has actually failed, or shows signs of pending failure. The decision is yours. Given that the component is relatively inexpensive (usually under ), it may be worthwhile to replace it if the mechanic is already under the hood.

One last note: bear in mind the coolant in your car's cooling system will degrade over time. It needs to be replaced every two or three years (follow the recommended interval in your owner's manual). If you neglect to replace the coolant, it will slowly become less able to cool your engine, possibly causing a fault code if the assembly overheats. Thus, make sure the fluid is in good condition before needlessly replacing the ECT sensor.

* Propane heaters are good for smaller basement rooms, around 300 square feet. They radiate heat using propane gas as its fuel. They do not require electricity or ductwork. It also warms objects and people before it warms the air.

A Few Safety Tips Regarding Space Heaters

* Place heaters on the floor NOT on the furniture or tables, where they may fall, dislodging or breaking parts in the heater, which could result in a fire or shock hazard.

* Do not use heaters in wet or moist places, unless is it certified for that purpose. Damage or corrosion to parts of the heater may result in a shock hazard or fire.

* Be sure that the plug fits snugly in the electrical outlet you are using. A loose plug can overheat, resulting in a fire.

* Do not place a rug or carpet over the cords, doing so can cause the cord to overheat causing a fire

* If your heater breaks, take it to a qualified repair person. Do not attempt to fix it yourself.

* Be sure that all your unvented gas-fired heaters are equipped with an oxygen depletion sensor. This sensor detects a reduced level of oxygen around the heater, and shuts it off before a hazardous amount of carbon monoxide accumulates. Heed the warnings about the dangers of carbon monoxide that are labeled on the heater.

* Have your gas heater and venting system installed and inspected by professionals according to local codes.

* Make sure that gas-fired heaters are vented properly

* IF YOU SMELL GAS, DO NOT TRY TO LIGHT THE APPLIANCE. Do not touch any electrical switches, or try to use the phone. Open a window or door and leave the area immediately. Then go to a neighbor and call a gas service person or fire department to alert them of the leak.

* Equip your home with at least one smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector per floor.

An Oxygen sensor is sometimes called a Lambda sensor or probe, it is used to lessen emissions from a vehicle by guaranteeing that the engine burns its fuel well and clean. Robert Bosch GmbH which is one of the world's biggest automobile components supplier was founded by Robert Bosch in 1886, and was responsible for the introduction of the first Lambda sensor/probe or oxygen sensor in the year 1976.

Oxygen sensors that are used for automobiles are generally referred to as O2 Sensors and after the first one was pioneered by Robert Bosch, Volvo and Saab, which is a manufacturer of automobiles, but which General Motors is now the proprietor of, decided to be the first set of companies to use an O2 sensor in their vehicles; this was within the same year the oxygen sensor was introduced. The O2 sensors were not introduced into the United States until about 1980, and in 1993, oxygen sensors became a requirement on all types of cars within many European countries.

Engine Control Unit which is abbreviated ECU or Power-train Control Module which is abbreviated PCM is a computer programme for motor vehicles that supervises the timing of the ignition, the amount of fuel and other factors that is essential for an internal combustion engine to operate. It collects data on oxygen concentration and then makes adjustments to the quantity of fuel that is injected into the engine to balance the level of air and fuel. The purpose of the ECU is to sustain a certain Air-Fuel Ratio by decrypting the data it collects from the oxygen sensors.

The component of the O2 sensor is a cylinder that is ceramic with porous electrodes from platinum laminating both the inside and out then the entire thing is further plated in gauze made of metal. The oxygen sensor or probe functions by getting a measurement of the ratio between the oxygen in the gas, in the exhaust and the external air, it then makes an adjustment that is dependent on the result that it acquired from the measurement.

The sensors will only function efficiently when they are heated to an approximation of 316 degrees Celsius or 600 degrees Fahrenheit; therefore the companies have started to make the more recent probes with heating components enclosed in the ceramic that makes the cylinder, in order for the sensor to heat up more quickly to the required temperature. The probes that were made without the heating component would reach the required temperature after a while, but took a little time as it had to depend on the heat from the exhaust, in addition there are elements in the engine that is made to absorb heat, so it took a while for the exhaust to get to the correct temperature to allow the older model oxygen sensors to work.

Now let's discuss the BMW oxygen sensor. This is a system with a measuring device putted in the exhaust. It is important to know how well the fuel has burned in the engine and this measuring device will provide you with that data. This data will be then examined by the fuel injection computer and it will make the necessary adjustments in order for the better burn of the fuel. These adjustments are all about the way in which the fuel combines with the air and more precisely - the oxygen in that air. This is very important because the better the fuel burns the higher is the performance of your BMW car.

The BMW ignition coil is another amazing thing - it will not fail for very long time and now let's see why it is so important. In order for your BMW car to start operating it needs a provider of a little spark which will ignite the combined with oxygen fuel. This spark in your BMW car is provided by the spark plugs but they need a high-voltage electrical charge and this will be provided to them by the ignition coil.

The ignition coil is based on induction. It will take power from the accumulator which is 12 volts and then it will transform it to thousands of volts because in order for the spark to be created this high voltage is an indispensability.
The BMW power steering pump on the other hand is the device which will transform the power from the engine into hydraulic pressure. This hydraulic pressure will enable you to easily turn the wheel in the desired direction. Basically the system is driven by the engine which will generate pressure in a rotary-vane pump and the faster your vehicle is going the more pressure is generated. Of course there is also a valve which will relief the system if the pressure goes too high. This valve prevents from damages and also it controls the pressure to be in the necessary values that are still big enough for the system to work properly.

We were talking about some high voltage and now let us discuss for a moment how this high voltage is distributed to for example - your ignition system. If your BMW car is old enough you will see that it uses a BMW distributor cap. This cap is usually plastic and it is used to wire up devices and insure a way for the high voltage to safely pass through. Of course there are many problems that can surely damage your BMW car and for example the first major problem is the water. As you may know the water conducts electricity well enough especially when the voltage of that electricity is high enough. This in our case is really bad because you have to be very careful not to allow any water to go even near the distributor cap.

You will see that with time some cracks begin to occur on every plastic material especially if the temperature of it is changing. If you see cracks on your distributor cap you will need to change it. This is easy and you can do it yourself. However because of these problems with the cap you may want to get a BMW car with DIS or distributorless ignition systems. The only problem there will be that they are a bit more complicated and you will most likely be unable to change it yourself if you are not an expert.

Now let's dive in some mechanics. Vibrations when big enough can cause some problems with your BMW car and will surely make you feel not at ease. To prevent this your BMW car is equipped with coil springs which in fact are known to be the reason for the good suspension of the BMW cars but in fact it is not the only reason.

The coil springs are controlled by the BMW shocks and the precise tuning of these shocks is the very thing that will provide the best suspension. This is why the tuning for every particular vehicle is a must and BMW defiantly knows that and perhaps this is why they are known well for their good suspension. Oxygen sensors are found in the exhaust system of cars, where they're exposed to fuel and other toxic gases such as HC, CO and NO2. These substances can pollute the sensor and hinder its capacity to work efficiently. Oil, fuel and coolant contamination can cause damage as well. Excessive soot buildup in the sensor's ceramic parts can increase response time and consequently decrease its capacity to detect oxygen efficiently.

The presence of lead in poor quality gasoline also decreases the life span of oxygen sensors. Exposure to silicates and silicones also hinders their ability to function correctly. Because the sensor's function is to determine the best ratio of fuel and air mixture in the car's exhaust system, contamination can cause the gas combustion engine to run rich (with unburnt fuel) or lean (with excess oxygen). This can decrease the car's mileage.

Therefore it's essential to maintain proper health of the sensor to minimize gas usage. Purchasing a new censor is the most obvious course of action to take when the old sensor is damaged. But purchasing new sensors, especially the wideband ones can be costly. Nevertheless, we're exploring the possibility of "recycling" the sensors by cleaning them.

Disclaimer: Please note that cleaning oxygen sensors is NOT advised and we cannot promise that the cleaned sensor will work; but in this piece we've attempted to consider methods to reuse sensors instead of purchasing replacement sensors.

So, please attempt the procedure at your own risk. Will the sensor function properly after being cleaned?

Because it's exposed to high heat in the exhaust system, the main contaminant will probably be a thick coating of baked carbon on the sensor tip, which won't dissolve readily in any solvents. One method to get rid of the carbon residue is by using a blow torch (such as propane) to heat the sensor tip. Hold the torch to the tip until it is about to turn red. Then quickly immerse the tip into water.

Next, blow compressed air to clean the tip. This will cause the deposit to break up. We advise you to repeat this several times until the residue is gone. You can try the CRC brand QD electronic cleaner to get rid of oil and fuel contaminants.

This is a special cleanser that doesn't leave behind any residue after it dries. Maintain a safe distance between the cleaner nozzle and oxygen sensor while you're spraying. Remember to use gloves and safety goggles to protect your eyes and hands.

With the rising cost of gas, and no sight in end, people are looking for ways to increase their gas mileage. The best way that I have found to do this is with your own DIY hydrogen gas generator that allows you to run your car on water.

Sounds like science fiction but it's not. In fact, I built a hydrogen generator a few months ago and increased my gas mileage by 30%! If a single mom with very little time on her hands and even less mechanical ability can do it, anyone can.

Now, you do not run your car on water alone. You actually use water in the hydrogen generator to create a burnable gas known as HHO, or Brown's gas that you then inject into the engines intake along with the gas or diesel fuel you already use.

Of course the auto makers design cars to be inefficient and even install oxygen sensors to ensure an inefficient air to fuel ratio. Did you know that you use only about 20% of the available energy in a gallon of gas for forward motion? The rest is wasted which is great for big oil and a tax hungry government. It is also beneficial to the auto makers because unburned fuel leaves deposits in your engine, shortening its life.

You can increase gas mileage by ensuring your tires are properly inflated, removing excess weight from the vehicle (maybe that mother in law you're forced to lug around with you) drive the speed limit and various other conventional methods.
